12. How should I store my products, and how long do they last?

Refrigerate all elderberry syrups and juices immediately upon arrival or after making them.

Keep them in a sealed container (like a glass jar or bottle).

Shelf life: up to 3 months when stored properly in the fridge.

Every bottle of elderberry syrup has a Best By date on the bottom. This is NOT an expiration date. Unopened bottles stored in the fridge are good for 2-3 months from the Best By date. Once a bottle is opened, consume it within 8-12 weeks.

Homemade elderberry syrup often has a shorter shelf life than store-bought versions due to the lack of preservatives. Store-bought syrups are often formulated with preservatives to extend their shelf life, allowing them to remain stable at room temperature for extended periods. Homemade syrups, without preservatives, need to be refrigerated and are best consumed within a few weeks or months.

There are no preservatives, thickeners, stabilizers, artificial sweeteners or additives of any kind in our elderberry syrup, so it must be refrigerated. We have found that shaking your jar often helps preserve it longer.

Here's a more detailed explanation:
Preservatives:

Store-bought syrups often contain preservatives like acids, sugar, or other chemicals that inhibit bacterial and fungal growth, extending their shelf life. Homemade syrups lack these preservatives, making them more susceptible to spoilage.

Signs of Spoilage:

Fermentation: Fizzing or bubbling indicates fermentation, and while fermented elderberry syrup can still be used for other purposes (like making elderberry wine or vinegar), it's generally not recommended for consumption, especially by children.

Mold: Visible mold growth is a clear sign of spoilage, and the syrup should be discarded.

Off Smell or Taste: A sour or unpleasant smell or taste indicates that the syrup has spoiled.
